Obama faces the music
Sat Oct 27, 2007 at 02:47:50 PM PDT
The controversy surrounding Obama's campaign has been well documented. Some have said as a result that his campaign is now done. Over. Finished. Finito.
New polling from New Hampshire (after the jump) and two new interviews with
Obama should give Obama supporters and doubters reason to pay attention.
Iglesias filed Hatch Act complaint against AGAG, McNulty, Rove and others
Tue Apr 24, 2007 at 06:04:07 PM PDT
Former US attorney in New Mexico David Iglesias did a phone interview on Hardball this evening wherein he divulged that three weeks ago he filled Hatch Act complaint with Scott Bloch and OSC against several Bush administration officials. Iglesias believes this complaint was at least partially the motivation behind OSC's current 'investigation' of Rove and other Bush administration officials. Given this disclosure, Congress has yet more reason to aggressively persue relevant documents and other records during the DoJ's decision-making process during the attorney purge and, more importantly, demand a real special counsel.
Murtha v. Hoyer: It's Getting Heated
Tue Nov 14, 2006 at 03:18:54 PM PDT
With just two days before House Democrats elect their next Majority Leader, the fight between Jack Murtha and Steny Hoyer has taken a turn for the worst. Murtha, facing accusations of ethical infractions, fired back. An aide to Murtha told CNN that the origin of the press reports were part of a campaign on Hoyer's part and that Murtha was being swift-boated.
Sayeth Murtha:
"I am disconcerted that some are making headlines by resorting to unfounded allegations that occured 26 years ago. I thought we were above this type of swift-boating attack. This is not how we restore integrity and civility to the United States Congress.
Conversely, neither is ducking questions of corruption. Questions which don't simply stem from Abscam but from more recent actions while Murtha was on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.
Murtha then took it a step further, changing the subject back to his stronghold (Iraq) and attacked his opponent.
Leahy to Seek to Restore Habeas Corpus Rights
Sat Nov 11, 2006 at 03:12:43 PM PDT
(HT to TalkLeft and How Appealing)
From the California Daily Journal:
An effort to restore habeas corpus rights for enemy combatants could be the first test of the Democrats' resolve to change course in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, who is expected to become chairman, confirmed Thursday that he is drafting a bill to undo portions of a recently passed law that prevent terrorism detainees from going to federal court to challenge the government's right to hold them indefinitely.

MT-Sen: Friend of Abramoff Slams Burns
Fri Nov 03, 2006 at 01:16:58 PM PDT
Republican media consultant and Abramoff friend Monty Warner recently
wrote a letter to the editor of Montana's Whitefish Pilot, to "set the record straight so the people of Montana know the truth":
Mr. Burns' staff--and perhaps Mr. Burns--were known to eat free sushi/meals often at Mr. Abramoff's DC restraurant, Signatures, and the joke was if they didn't, they would have starved to death.
Frankly, it was widely viewed in DC that Mr. Abramoff effectively exerted implicit control over Mr. Burns whenever he and his team needed to get something accomplished.

Republican Leaders Actively Hindering Contracting Oversight
Sat Oct 28, 2006 at 12:51:50 PM PDT
For supposed proponents of limited government, the current Republican crowd seems to hate independent scrutiny of federal contracts for cases of waste, fraud and abuse. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the recent firing of 60 contracted investigators from the Surveys & Investigations Staff (S&IS) of the House Appropriations Committee. The S&IS has been an active component of the House Appropriations Committee for 63 years, made up of former employees of the FBI, CIA and other federal investigative bodies. The bulk of its work is done covertly, its findings largely classified and rarely published.
On October 16th, House Appropriations Committee Chairman Jerry Lewis (R-CA) unilaterally fired the 60 contractors, leaving the unit gutted with only 16 permanent investigators remaining in the unit. (Lewis himself has spent over $50k on lawyers over the course of this past month, as federal investigators continue to look into his history with the Copeland, Lowery, Jacquez, Denton and White lobbying firm and more specifically former disgraced congressman-turned-lobbyist Bill Lowery.)

The Abramoff Investigation is Expanding
Mon Oct 23, 2006 at 10:22:19 PM PDT
US News & World Report provides a much-needed update on the federal investigations surrounding the corrupt lobbying practices of Jack Abramoff and company:
"We thought it was wrapping up, but they've indicated that it is really about to expand," said one source involved in the case. "It's not ending anytime soon or even when he goes to jail."
Recently, US N&WR
reported that Abramoff now has his
very own FBI desk to work at. He spends "up to four hours a day detailing his shady business to agents eager to nail more congressmen in the scandal."

Is This Why Lewis Fired the House Appropriations Investigators?
Thu Oct 19, 2006 at 09:13:02 PM PDT
Per
TPM Muckraker and dcg2's
diary we learn:
...in a round of calls Monday evening, Lewis fired 60 investigators who had worked for his committee rooting out fraud, waste and abuse, effective immediately. As in, don't bother coming in on Tuesday.
The investigators were contract workers, brought on to handle the extraordinary level of fraud investigations facing the panel. Sixteen permanent investigative staff are staying on, according to CQ.
The question, obviously, why?
I venture to guess after the jump.
Let's Help Expand the Playing Field
Wed Oct 18, 2006 at 06:14:47 AM PDT
WaPo:
Top Democrats said yesterday that they are planning to significantly expand the number of GOP House seats they will target during the final 20 days of the campaign but that financial disputes and fundraising problems are hindering the effort.
Democrats said private polls have convinced top party officials that they could pick up 40 or more seats -- nearly double their internal projections from a week ago -- if they spend enough money on television advertising for long-shot races. Strategists James Carville and Stan Greenberg are among those pleading with party leaders to go deep into debt to run ads in as many as 50 GOP-held districts.
Inside, how you can help.
How to Structurally Nationalize the Mid-Term Elections
Wed Oct 04, 2006 at 01:56:04 PM PDT
As Republican incumbents and challengers alike run away and claim independence from the failed policies and priorities of the Bush administration, there is an important strategic imperative from every Democratic politician to use to their advantage. That is--that every single election in the House and the Senate between a Republican and a Democrat isn't just a choice between two candidates but a choice between a Republican majority or a Democratic majority. Particularly in the wake of Bill Frist's 'retreatist' Taliban statements and the ongoing furor over Dennis Hastert's foreknowledge of Mark Foley's improper behavior, now more than ever is the time to hammer away at the failed Republican leadership in both the Senate and the House.
Abramoff Knew US Would Invade Iraq in March, 2002
Sat Sep 30, 2006 at 09:18:04 PM PDT
Newly-disclosed e-mails from the Minority Chair of the House Government Reform Committee Henry Waxman provide new areas of insight into Jack Abramoff's closeness to the Bush administration. Most shocking of all (at least of those I've been able to read so far) is that Abramoff off-handedly mentions "the upcoming war in Iraq."
The date--March, 2002.
Support the Emergency Amendment of HAVA for the '06 Elections
Wed Sep 27, 2006 at 08:43:59 PM PDT
Yesterday, I diaried about Senators Boxers' bill which would "reimburse jurisdictions for amounts paid or incurred in preparing, producing, and using contingency paper ballots in the November 7, 2006, Federal general election." Senators Chris Dodd & Russ Feingold have joined Boxer in co-sponsoring the legislation. John Kerry has also joined as a co-sponsor and introduced a
Sense of the Senate bill, recognizing the need for emergency paper ballots which could be used in the event of machine malfunction or other election day mishaps.
Boxer, Feingold & Dodd Introduce Emergency Amendment to HAVA
Tue Sep 26, 2006 at 08:03:08 PM PDT
According to
Brad Blog, Senators Barbara Boxer, Russ Feingold and Chris Dodd have introduced emergency legislation which would amend the Help America Vote Act of 2002. The bill would "reimburse jurisdictions for amounts paid or incurred in preparing, producing, and using contingency paper ballots in the November 7, 2006, Federal general election."

MD: More Election Insanity (Updated)
Wed Sep 20, 2006 at 08:47:28 PM PDT
Maryland politics is quickly becoming
bizarro-land. We have a Republican Governor, Ehrlich, coming out and demanding paper ballots for November's mid-term elections. Ehrlich's demands are met by Maryland Democratic officials, notably Linda Lamone & Mike Miller, as "crazy" and that it "cannot happen" and "will not happen."
But, most striking of all, there are new votes which have been unearthed from the 9/12 primary:
In Montgomery and Prince George's counties yesterday, election officials continued to count the thousands of paper provisional ballots that could determine the outcome of the 4th Congressional District Democratic primary race between incumbent U.S. Rep. Albert R. Wynn and challenger Donna Edwards. Prince George's officials yesterday cracked opened 26 machines and retrieved votes that had not been counted.
MD-04: Edwards to Challenge Election Results (Updated)
Fri Sep 15, 2006 at 04:34:32 PM PDT
Donna Edwards, Albert Wynn's progressive opponent in MD-04's Democratic primary,
will challenge the results of this past Tuesday's election, the complete results of which are still unknown.
Candidate Donna Edwards, who is locked in a tight race with Rep. Albert Wynn for the Democratic nomination in district four, today said she intends to challenge returns from two or three precincts where voting cards were allegedly left unsecured overnight.
Edwards says Prince George's County voting officials who did not complete the ballot count on Tuesday night, left electronic voters cards in a truck overnight without security.
MD-04: The Waiting Game
Wed Sep 13, 2006 at 08:36:54 PM PDT
We'll have to wait until Monday until we know the winner of the MD-04 Democratic primary battle between progressive challenger Donna Edwards and seven-term incumbent Albert Wynn. Problems with voting machines in Montgomery County resulted in a large number of provisional ballots being cast. The exact number of provisional ballots are unknown. A local
CBS report suggests 10,000 to 12,000 were cast in Montgomery County, which comprises a small part of Maryland's fourth district. Provisional ballots not only used during the extra hour when polls were extended, but during the morning when election officials offered them to voters due to the voting machines not being operable.
Edwards has fared very well in Montgomery County, receiving 60.21% of the vote (compared to Wynn's 34.26% thus far).
MD-04: Wynn in "Political Challenge of his Career," Fabricates Endorsements
Sat Sep 09, 2006 at 07:37:22 AM PDT

So says the
Washington Post about Tuesday's MD-04 Democratic primary, in today's Metro section. Granted, this is coming from the same paper who
endorsed Donna Edwards a week and a half ago. Even before the paper's endorsement, numerous signs were pointing favorably toward Edwards. Namely, Edwards' campaign style and Wynn's unprepared response to Edwards' campaign of accountability and truth telling.
Added onto Ned Lamont's victory in the Democratic primary in CT-Sen., the continual plummet of Congress' favorability and the increasing sense from MD-04 voters of Wynn's bubble of unaccountability have all created the perfect storm which just might knock Wynn off his throne.
